ABSTRACT

When a student is disrespectful, it is usually not about the teacher. It is usually about the other students who are watching. When a teacher has to address a problem behavior, a great idea is whispering to the student. This avoids the embarrassment and the potential verbal retaliation. Conversely, praising students publicly generates positive energy in the classroom. It boosts the esteem of whomever is being bragged on, and it reinforces for the students what is valued in the classroom. The value of positive reinforcement cannot be underestimated, and positive reinforcement is usually more meaningful when it is public. There is more to effective instruction than delivering a good lesson. A good class climate is essential for good learning.
