ABSTRACT

In historical perspective the 1988 Summer and 2018 Winter Olympics effectively frame Korea’s remarkable and rapid digital development. Chapter 8 examines the role of the Olympics in Korea’s digital development at those two points in time. The 1988 Seoul Olympics occurred during the industrial mass media era, yet the event provided an opportunity for Korea to show the world its advancing digital infrastructure. By the time Korea hosted the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics the nation was an acknowledged world leader in broadband network infrastructure. Accordingly, the 2018 Winter Games showcased Korea’s digital prowess, with emphasis on next generation networks for both commercial 5G and public safety purposes.
