ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some key challenges faced by multinational enterprise (MNE) in managing people internationally. The competition for talent plays out at more of a global level than a regional or national one. The global job market is influenced by demographic factors such as increased life expectancy and the supply and flow of labour at the international level. As a result of globalisation and notwithstanding a number of recently imposed migration barriers, mobility has dramatically increased across geographical and cultural boundaries. The resource-based view sees the firm as a unique combination of tangible and intangible resources, with human capital deemed to be a key factor of organisational success. MNE subsidiaries must comply with and adapt to a host country’s rules, laws, and regulations, first and foremost being employment law. Global talent management encompasses all organisational activities that aim to attract, select, develop and retain talented employees in firms operating across borders.
