ABSTRACT

Digital technology is constantly changing and that’s one of the reasons it is so difficult to manage. No one can know what is around the corner. Perhaps a commercially available quantum computer will be launched next week that somehow renders existing cyber security null and void. But organisations can protect themselves to a degree by monitoring technology developments and identifying, and following, those that are most likely to affect them.

In this final chapter, we review the nature of a few emerging technologies which are starting to disrupt a number of industries: Big Data analysis; robotic process automation; artificial intelligence; wearable computing; the Internet of Things; 3D printing; augmented reality; blockchain; and brain-computer interfaces. Any and all of these may well turn out to create massive and unexpected changes to your industry. Keep a watchful eye on them and any other technologies that start to look significant. 231
