ABSTRACT

At the heart of digital governance are the strategic questions: Where are we now, where do we want to be and how are we going to get there? These are the questions that leaders need to address if they are to guide their organisations through today’s rapidly changing technology landscape. And given the extent of digital technology within almost all organisations, these are hard questions to answer.

A start can be made by auditing your organisation’s maturity in its use of digital technology. This, combined with insights into consumers and competitors, can help you develop a vision. But moving towards this vision is inevitably difficult, especially as the technology landscape is constantly shifting. However, there are a number of basic principles encompassing issues such as risk management, customer focus and information management, underpinned by situational awareness and continuous improvement, that can enable success. It is, though, the task of organisational leaders to achieve this success. Ultimately digital technology is their responsibility.15
