ABSTRACT

Communication media enable coaching conversations between coach and client via distance and independent of location. The chapter begins by examining the characteristics of communication processes and discussing the communication process in the coaching context. It considers the role of media in the coaching interaction and the factors that may influence media selection in coaching. The chapter explores the strengths and weaknesses of four different types of communication media: Audio-based communication, video-based communication, text-based media and 3D graphical self-representation (avatar-based) communication. It considers the advantages and potential limitations of each of these media as well as the factors that may influence media selection for coaching.
