ABSTRACT

Interventions by governments in the domain of events require justification and articulation through policy, with the most widely emphasised focus being the creation of public good, and this is the substantive focus for Chapter 11. Other frequently employed justifications include social equity, efficiency and failure of the marketplace. How policy is formed within a political environment is discussed, noting the importance and nature of power and how it is exercised by different actors. Within the chapter, specific emphasis is placed upon economic, cultural, social and environmental policy that involves or directs the events sector, including regulations and support for events that is provided by the public sector.
