ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2 we explore the exciting and diverse world of planned events, starting with key definitions and the question: what is an event? The essence of planned events is revealed through an examination of the meanings attached to time and the importance of places and settings, and how size, duration, frequency and periodicity are important variables. This leads to a typology of planned events, and how both their form and function must be considered. Differences between planned and unplanned events are examined. The forms in our typology are all discussed: cultural celebrations, business and trade, arts and entertainment, sport and recreation, political and state, and private functions, as are major functions that link to the terms hallmark, iconic, media, cause-related, corporate, and mega events.
