ABSTRACT

Event design is the theme of this chapter, building on the notion of the event experience in Chapter 6 and how that experience can be designed by event producers. Commencing with a discussion of what design is and how it has evolved from a focus on creating form, to designing experiences, to co-creation of value through collaboration. Creativity and innovation are discussed. Principles for event design are articulated, with specific advice on creating meaningful experiences, and the design of settings, sensory stimulation, and themes and programmes. The elements of style and the need for continuous improvement are emphasized in the context of both life-cycle theory and services design and evaluation.
