ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine personal, social and cultural motivations, as well as looking at specific motives and expectations involved in attending particular events. This chapter draws upon the field of social psychology as discussed in Chapters 3 and 5. A decision-making model is developed that also takes into account barriers and constraints, substitution potential, post-experience evaluation and decisions about the future – such as repeat visits or loyalty. A number of theoretical foundations are considered to be important, including serious leisure, social worlds, leisure involvement, and the event travel career trajectory. How different stakeholders make decisions about attending events is also given attention.
