ABSTRACT

If there were a diversity and inclusion fairy godmother, the one wish I would ask of them is to eliminate the phrase the “right fit” forever. We have to stop hiring, staffing, and promoting people just because we believe they are the “right fit.” The “right fit” feeds straight into our biases and expectations of people and won’t get us the benefits of diversity. A “right fit” mentality means hiring or promoting someone who you think “checks all the boxes” without recognizing that they don’t have the right skills for the role. Stop focusing on the right fit. Start focusing on competencies instead.
