ABSTRACT

This chapter covers what we know about epidemiology and risk factors, making clear that ARFID can affect a wide range of individuals: males and females, children, adolescents and adults, those with cognitive abilities in the normal range and those with learning disabilities, those with complex medical histories and those without. The concept of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors is considered in relation to ARFID, and current findings are summarised in relation to comparisons with anorexia nervosa in terms of who develops the condition. Common co-occurring conditions and characteristics are discussed, including anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and a range of medical conditions. This chapter covers the correlates aspect of ARFID, or things that are ‘co-related’ or have been observed to be present alongside ARFID.
