ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what we know about the causes of ARFID. It starts with the fact that at present there has been no one clear factor identified that causes the condition. A model that can help in understanding the development of ARFID in any one individual is proposed. The three most commonly encountered drivers of the avoidance and restriction of food intake seen in ARFID are explored in more detail. There include low interest in food or eating; avoidance related to the sensory properties of food or eating; and concern related to possible negative effects of eating. Five case examples are used to illustrate points made in the text. This chapter therefore explores what we know about causes.
