ABSTRACT

In 1993, 1 year after the formation of Disney Theatrical Productions (DTP), then Disney CEO Michael Eisner agreed to renovate the New Amsterdam Theatre, the former jewel of 42nd Street. This chapter examines how Eisner was convinced to renovate the space, and then discusses the renovation process. It also recounts the history of the New Amsterdam Theatre and the history of the Walt Disney Corporation on Broadway. Additionally the chapter explores the clean up of Times Square under Mayor Rudi Guiliani and the part that DTP played in that effort.
