ABSTRACT

Newsies was never meant for Broadway, but somehow the scrappy little show about newsboys at the turn of the twentieth century became one of Disney Theatrical’s biggest hits. This chapter explains the journey of the title from a Razzie winning “B” movie to a Broadway smash. Through savvy social media, smart production decisions, and a willingness to “watch what happens,” Newsies, which was intended for licensing, took a detour on the Great White Way, winning the hearts of audiences and critics alike.
