ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of a collaborative director’s essential skills. These include guiding, participating, delegating, empowering, coordinating, advising, and managing. The chapter also outlines three phases of a directing project: preparation, pre-production, and rehearsal. The principles of excellent communication and leadership skills, both in the rehearsal hall and in production meetings, are introduced. These principles are supported by the author’s personal directing examples as well as direct quotes taken from a team of professional theatre directors and artists consulted for this project. The chapter ends with activities for self-reflection for the student’s personal and professional growth, with the goal of improving collaborative skills.
