ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and applies the group dynamic principle of Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing to both rehearsals and production meetings. Three powerful communication tools – brainstorming, active listening, and questioning – are also introduced and examples provided. A discussion on the role of leadership skills in the directorial process includes a table of potential rehearsal or production issues that may arise with possible communication and leadership solutions. This section includes a discussion of directorial leadership qualities, such as disciplined, fair, respectful, mindful, motivational, and compassionate. Practical communication exercises, rehearsal activities, physical and vocal warmups, theatre games, and improvisations are woven throughout the chapter as well as examples and quotes from current professional directors to clarify these principles. The chapter ends with activities for self-reflection for the student’s personal and professional growth, reinforcing strategies for managing a collaborative theatre environment.
