ABSTRACT

The substantial income inequality in fishing coupled with the prominence of fishing households has contributed to the high concentration in the broad agriculture sector observed earlier. Households are also classified according to one-digit Income Inequality under One-Digit (ISIC) with some modifications. First, mining and quarrying are omitted because of their insignificance in Hong Kong. Second and more important, fishing and agriculture are separated in view of their strikingly different pattern of income distribution. Income distribution by one-digit ISIC classification has shed some light on the inter-sectoral differences among the broad sectors. The effects of industrial employment on income distribution have been analysed by various broad sectors, by one-digit ISIC classification and by finer industrial classification. The degree of inequality differs considerably between the various broad industrial sectors, and the ranking is quite unequivocal by any measure of inequality.
