ABSTRACT

The language of religion, like the language of the Bible, is adult language, full of just those abstractions and generalisations which the children are unable to grasp. The responsibility for planning and equipping and launching the democratic expedition will obviously rest upon the parents, not the children, and this is going to entail for them a deal of hard work, careful thought, and detailed planning. Moreover, families are usually small in the degenerate days and there will certainly not be room in the family boat for any passengers lolling idly on the cushions and reading newspapers, or taking a merely bored, tolerant view of the proceedings. The children will put two and two together and will make the generalisation in their own good time. One of the most important of the limitations is that children have little or no capacity to understand abstractions or generalisations.
