ABSTRACT

The story in both cases might actually be the same, for primitive folk were as conservative in their tastes as any modern children and nobody would be allowed to take liberties with the traditional sagas of the gang, but its effectiveness would depend on the genius of the story-teller. Stories should not be re-told, they should be re-created, and re-creation, like creation, demands an artist. The commonest mistake that grown-ups make when they are teaching or story-telling to children is the mistake of trying to teach, or to tell, more than one thing at a time. The Old Testament is a perfect mine of magnificent stories, enough for a life-time. Use these stories freely; some of them may well be tales of men and women who are still alive and at work.
