ABSTRACT

Hospital crime prevention is about identifying criminal activity and implementing fixes before more crime can occur, rather than reacting to crimes as they occur. In order to provide more value to the healthcare organization, the security department needs to focus on the prevention of crime. Crime prevention began with a police officer walking the beat, patrolling a neighborhood attempting to resolve social problems within the neighborhood they served. Research shows that hot spot crime prevention can reduce crime without increasing crime in adjacent areas and that crime depends not just on criminals and policing in key places but also on other factors, such as fences, alleys, and other environmental features. Mapping of crime locations and other variables allows for the tracking and trending of incident data to react to incident rates. Mapping generates data that identifies the highest-frequency crime areas or hot spots. Mapping data allows for the identification and resolution of crime in the healthcare setting.
