ABSTRACT

Schools are community centers for social and cultural activities, as well as learning institutions. Public schools are taking over more roles and responsibilities for children than ever before. Many schools have transformed into community health centers, community food and clothing banks, and community social hubs. Social injustices in gerrymandered regions result in school districts that have become, or remain, segregated because of racial districting that pushes out minority-based majorities into substandard school districts and segregated charter schools. The LIQUID Model is emphasized in terms of inclusive practices under a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). Family engagement encompasses much more than parent-teacher conferences. The use of “family” engagement versus “parental” engagement is intentional and aligns with the realities of families in communities. Culture can be used as an asset and can be used to positively influence and bridge family and school relationships. Opportunities to increase family engagement are described including cultural brokering, ethnic matching, schoolcentric and communitycentric practices, sports and theatrical performances, student led informational conferences, evidence-based family engagement and wellness practices, parenting classes, and development of a family center are suggested.
