ABSTRACT

Chairwork is an emotive method of intervention. Accordingly, these techniques provide an effective means to elicit, express, process, and alleviate distressing emotions. In line with emotional processing theory (Rachman, 1980; Foa, Huppert, & Cahill, 2006), therapists aim to raise affect to a level which is high, but tolerable, during chairwork to maximise its therapeutic effects.
