ABSTRACT

Implementing chairwork requires special considerations. This chapter addresses some of the practical issues which arise when getting started with chairwork. These include when and how to introduce chairwork within therapy sessions; concluding and consolidating chairwork; and the optimal number, arrangement, and orientation of chairs. Therapeutic indications (or ‘markers’) for initiating chairwork in CBT are also discussed. Finally, thought is given to the importance of the therapeutic relationship when using these emotionally demanding interventions.
