ABSTRACT

Chairwork is used to facilitate cognitive restructuring in creative ways. These techniques have collected a bewildering array of titles over the years (e.g. externalisation of voices, forced empathy, reversed-advocacy, etc.) but actually adopt a limited number of dialogical forms. This chapter introduces core chair-based techniques for modifying distressing cognitions, including two-chair cognitive restructuring, role-reversal, and attorney role-plays. More advanced, emotionally evocative restructuring techniques are then described, such as three-chair cognitive restructuring and defence of the self. Finally, thought is given to how chairwork can be used to transform distressing mental images.
