ABSTRACT

Experiential techniques such as chairwork are regarded as being amongst the most effective ways to modify negative core beliefs. This chapter introduces a variety of chair-based techniques including the three stages of the point-counterpoint method (sometimes referred to as ‘schema dialogues’; Young, Klosko, & Weishaar, 2003) and de Oliveira’s (2015) trial-based method. The chapter also describes how chairwork is used to tackle distressing childhood memories linked to core beliefs through empty-chair confrontation, two-chair historical role-play (Arntz & Weertman, 1999), and three-chair enactive rescripting.
