ABSTRACT

CBT therapists will often consolidate positive core beliefs alongside modifying negative core beliefs. Chairwork can provide clients with a compelling experience of positive schemata. This chapter describes some of the ways chairwork is used to generate and reinforce positive core beliefs, including Chadwick’s (2003) two-chair method. Thought is also given to how chairwork can be used to contrast and operationalise the client’s ‘new way of being’ (i.e. a positive system of belief) versus their ‘old way of being’.
