ABSTRACT

Schema therapy (ST; Young, 1990; Young, Klosko, & Weishaar, 2003) is an evolving psychotherapy which draws upon cognitive, behavioural, psychodynamic, and experiential psychotherapies. Central to this model is the concept of schema ‘modes’: changeable and dynamic cognitive-affective states. Chairwork is regarded as a particularly effective method of intervention in ST. This chapter describes how chairwork is used to address dysfunctional schema modes. These include procedures for combating parent modes, overcoming coping modes, healing child modes, strengthening the healthy adult mode, and building metacognitive awareness. These techniques are readily integrated into CBT as a means to overcome self-criticism, emotional avoidance, and distress intolerance.
