ABSTRACT

Whilst CBT traditionally focuses the resolution of client problems, positive approaches to CBT aim to cultivate strength, well-being, and optimism. This chapter presents a variety of chairwork techniques for building hope, resilience, gratitude, existential meaning, and purpose. Interventions for facilitating self-forgiveness and the forgiveness of others are also described. Together, these chair-based techniques offer a valuable augmentation not only to CBT and positive psychotherapy, but also allied approaches including acceptance and commitment therapy and adaptive disclosure.
