ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe the corollary work that goes into placing worklives in relation to cities and regions. We unpack this in two ways: first, we show how place contributes to mobile knowledge workers’ (MKWrs) relational and reputational work; and second, we illuminate those practices that constitute quality of worklife through place. The city and region are made to work by mobile knowledge workers in relation to myriad opportunities, challenges, resources, people and networks intersecting in lived and imagined places that are continuously negotiated and remade. The corollary work of placing one’s worklife is shaped by a gendered culture and rhetoric of mobile knowledge work as mobile, agile and flexible.
