ABSTRACT

Sarah Roach, a light mulatto woman, was a slave in Maryland, and was sold by her master to a person residing in the State of Delaware. The laws of the latter State prohibit the introduction of slaves, unless brought in by persons who remove into it to settle and reside. All others, who may be taken there, under any other circumstances, become immediately free. Under this law, Sarah became entitled to her liberty; but she remained in bondage several years before she became acquainted with the position in which she was placed by being taken into Delaware. When she was made acquainted with her rights, she left her master, and went to Philadelphia, where she resided many years.
