ABSTRACT

A planter in Virginia, held a young girl as a slave. When she was about sixteen years old, being pressed for money, he sold her to a speculator, who made a business of purchasing slaves, and transporting them to the South, or West. This girl had no trace of African descent. Her hair was straight, and her complexion quite as light as the generality of white people; and withal she was uncommonly handsome. Her new master treated her with much kindness, took her as his body servant, and made many promises of what he would do for her. She had discernment enough to discover that his intentions were not of the most honorable character; and taking the advantage of the liberty allowed, escaped to Philadelphia. She had little difficulty in her journey; for her complexion and features bore no resemblance to the African.
