ABSTRACT

The following affecting incident occurred, I think, about the year 1810. In relating it, I use the fictitious name of James Austin, because I am unwilling to wound the feelings of his respectable relations, descended from an ancient and worthy family of Friends, in New Jersey. His predecessor filled a highly responsible station under the government of that province, as early as 1703, and was among the first who emigrated to that part of the country from England.
