ABSTRACT

Contracting involves the therapist and client agreeing to work with one another based on a mutual understanding of the service that is on offer. In this chapter, the author shows how therapists might describe different forms of single-session therapy (SST) so that the client can give their informed consent to proceed. He focuses on the nature of the service on offer to clients and how a therapist might make this explicit. The author outlines several different types of SST services and how they can be made explicit so that the client can give their informed consent to proceed, which becomes their contract. Walk-in services offer people the opportunity to be seen promptly without an appointment. Some people use a walk-in service once, while others may use it several times and different services have different stances concerning future sessions being available.
