ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how to increase the impact that a session may have on a client in Single-Session Therapy (SST). It discusses several ‘red flags’ where the therapist needs to tread carefully when considering increasing the impact of their SST work. A good SST session engages the client’s emotions so that they can feel and process at the same time. Too much emotion and they stop thinking. While there are some techniques that are often used in SST, when it comes to techniques that will make an impact on a particular client, it is best not to use other therapists’ techniques. When a client feels understood by the therapist and the nuances of their emotions attended to, then they can search for a solution with an appropriate level of emotional engagement. Therapist self-disclosure can have a profound impact on one client and leave another one cold.
