ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses for a person help themself quickly, four conditions need to be present: knowledge, a committed reason to change, preparedness to accept the costs of change if any and taking appropriate action. Knowing what to do is probably the weakest of the four conditions in accounting for rapid change. In some approaches to Single-Session Therapy (SST), knowledge is crucial, while in other approaches, it is relatively unimportant and may be counterproductive. Having a good reason to change and being committed to the reason is core. Unfortunately, psychological change usually involves the person experiencing some costs. The chapter presents an example of how someone helped themself quickly and then uses this example to spell out the four significant conditions that need to be in place for someone to help themself quickly. SST rests on the assumption that people can help themselves quickly if the conditions are in place for them to do so.
