ABSTRACT

Physical resources in the shape of buildings, equipment and playing fields are one of the factors which have a bearing on leisure provision for any age group and it is important at this point to look at the use which is made of the resources which already exist. A full leisure life includes the exploration of the possibilities afforded by the immediate locality and yet many of those professionally involved in both education and youth service behave as though it were their duty to protect premises and to actively discourage their use. The school education of children would not suffer and in the long run their leisure lives might benefit immeasurably. The playleader scheme is youthwork without the youth club and helps thousands of young people make the best use of leisure in public parks; and yet the scheme is very little known by those who do not come into direct contact with it.
