ABSTRACT

Flexibility can be defined as the willingness to be open to new ideas. No matter how great the athlete, there is always room for improvement. Balancing confidence with humility that is sufficient to accept help can be challenging. Conscientiousness can be defined as one’s tendency to think about the needs and desires of others. This includes respecting the time and opinions of those around you. Self-centeredness can impede one’s progress. It can also alienate one from their teammates. Having a big ego and lacking flexibility can seriously interfere with an athlete’s growth. Curt Schilling admits that at the outset of his career he lacked the humility he needed to accept help. Once he was able to do so, his career took off.
