ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine the archaeological evidence for eremitic life in Anglo-Saxon England between the 7th and 10th centuries. A number of Anglo-Saxon hermits and hermitages are attested to by the historical sources, many with monastic associations. Special emphasis will be placed on the archaeological evidence for a number of these most important early hermits including Cuthbert, Samson, Guthlac and Pega, as well as the broader tradition of cave and island hermitages in early medieval England.
