ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the development of the hermit and related eremitic communities in the the Post-Roman and Early Medieval West (c. AD 350–1000). In this chapter, a general overview is presented as well as the important emerging theoretical and regulatory contexts underpinning the hermit life. Several key archaeological sites are consequently examined in this context.
