ABSTRACT

The most primitive phases, is absolutely pure aesthetic reaction to be found; nowhere certainly purely noetic action. With noetic behaviour the possibilities of life, the building up of behaviour, begin anew in each individual. The development of behaviour has taken place according to two distinct types or methods of action. In the first, actions are governed by feeling alone. To that type of reaction the name of aesthetic action may be given. In the second type the immediate feeling is not the sole conscious determinant, and the act itself is a step in a chain of behaviour leading to a prospective result. Noetic action has culminated in the powers of the symbolism of conceptual thought. The conative impulses of life, hitherto groping in narrow channels of affective response, found the way open to their actualization in a manner never before possible.
