ABSTRACT

The introductory chapter begins with a definition of the notion of demonstrative and examines the morphological properties of the demonstratives of modern Japanese, Korean, and Turkish from a typological perspective. The chapter proposes that (i) Japanese and Korean have three-way distance contrast, while Turkish exhibits two-way contrast; (ii) most demonstratives in Japanese, Korean, and Turkish are not monomorphemic; and (iii) Korean has a person-oriented system, while Turkish has a distance-oriented system, and Japanese has both systems. This chapter also takes a look at the previous accounts concerning the demonstrative use in Turkish and presents an overview of the investigation.
