ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and explains the distribution of Turkish demonstratives from a modern linguistic perspective. The first half of the chapter focuses on the exophoric use of the demonstratives. It shows that (i) relative distance is not always a necessary feature for the exophoric usages of the demonstratives; (ii) bu and şu are compatible with deictic signs such as a pointing gesture, whereas o is not; (iii) the exophoric demonstratives are basically used as an introducer marker of a discourse; and (iv) the text deictic and definite article–like usages of the demonstratives can be treated under the heading exophoric use. In the second half, the chapter concentrates on the endophoric uses of the demonstratives and claims that (i) non-anaphoric bu and o function as a marker that determines the distribution of the referent on the controllable domain of the speaker, (ii) discourse deictic demonstratives bu and o can be best analysed as S anaphors, and (iii) non-anaphoric bu and o and anaphoric bu are restricted to adnominal demonstratives, whereas anaphoric o has both adnominal and pronominal characteristics.
