ABSTRACT

The chapter investigates the synchronic stages of the diachronic development of modern Turkish demonstratives and sheds light on their grammaticalization processes. The chapter reveals that (i) the exophoric demonstratives are a common source for the non-anaphoric use, anaphoric use, sentence connectives, third-person pronoun, and demonstrative correlate, (ii) the grammaticalization of the demonstratives forms a chain-like structure, containing a gradual loss of the referential meaning and increasing enrichment in the textual meaning, and (iii) the grammaticalization is determined by some syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factors.
