ABSTRACT

This study has (i) analysed the versatility of modern Turkish demonstratives bu, şu, and o from the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic points of view, (ii) determined the characteristics of these forms, (iii) systematically described their various common usages, (iv) provided a comprehensive explanation to the several proposals regarding their distribution, (v) examined the development of the grammaticalization chains of the demonstratives in Turkish, and (vi) shed light on the relationship between the synchronic variation in bu, şu, and o and their linguistic changes. This final chapter summarizes the main findings of my analysis and draws pertinent implications for further research.
