ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary information about sample selection and fieldwork, together with a discussion of the design of the questionnaire. British Market Research Bureau contract included sample design, drawing of the sample, production of all necessary documents, the fieldwork staff, coding, punching and the production of the data set on cards. The Job Description Index is fully described in M. Smith. It measures job satisfaction on five scales that relate to work, pay, promotion, people and supervisors. After final piloting of the questionnaire five briefing sessions – lasting six hours each – were held between 29 September and 6 October 1971. The main fieldwork was undertaken between 4 October and 6 November 1971 and a second fieldwork period was held from 6 December to 24 December 1971. The resulting response rate was regarded as unsatisfactory and a second fieldwork period was held from 6 December to 24 December 1971.
