ABSTRACT
This chapter considers Rossetti’s earliest devotional writings beginning with the prayer book Annus Domini, which provides an example of the Christian environmentalist strategy of retrieving biblical scripture with a pro-environment message. The treatment of Called to Be Saints shows how the four evangelist writers provide models to Rossetti for serving God through writing. The book Seek and Find also largely uses a retrieval strategy while often challenging conventional nature symbolism. The section on Seek and Find ends with a discussion of Rossetti’s views on ethical treatment of animals.
