ABSTRACT

The impact of the returning mine-worker generally on the life of his kraal in theory should be obvious and measurable. In accordance with this a priori theory an imposing list of influences was compiled from various sources. Subsequent questioning of Government officials, missionaries, business men and settlers to obtain specific data revealed a paucity of concrete results of civilisation’s impact. A longer period of investigation of the Native kraals might perhaps have revealed more—a careful selection of villages near mission stations unquestionably does. The new and subversive ideas of their children, exposed to similar contacts, will find a readier reception and sympathy because of the earlier experience of the parents, just as the children of former Native Christians find it immeasurably easier to think and live their Christian lives. In organisation, the reintegrative process is under way. Under the adopted system of indirect rule, the authority of the Chief has been defined and strengthened by the Government.
