ABSTRACT

Christians believe that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Him. Western civilization believes that God has revealed Himself in history. By the Christian apologist the revelation of God in history is appealed to as a confirmation and support of the revelation of God in Christ. The non-Christian philosopher looks to it as his only salvation from an alternative of atheism and despair. The characteristic effort of popular philosophy in England is the attempt to reconcile the religion of order and progress, which is the sincere fundamental belief of a great number of educated people, with the traditional Christianity to which they desire to cling. The chief task of the historian is “to unravel this tangle of causation”—to ascertain where the religious motives behind our wars end and where the commercial motives begin.
