ABSTRACT

The different strata in society give rise to different considerations. The analysis of the life of the unemployed in terms of leisure, which is so often made, must be rejected. Leisure as produced by the showman, the amusements caterer, the film magnate, must act as the substitute, filling the void which industrialism has entailed. The rise of the Gospel of Leisure cannot be explained simply by the necessity of replacing the Gospel of Work. All forms of leisure have become commercialized, endless devices are offered to the idle person, each to be enjoyed only on condition that he has money to pay. In a world where relationships are in the main reduced to a cash nexus, the exploitation of leisure for profit is only to be expected. Failure to satisfy means that leisure fails to fulfil the function assigned to it, means that it does not prove adequate to its task of reconciling the people to their lot.
